In 2020 the family law firm of Phillips & Peters celebrated its 10th anniversary with the creation of a scholarship. Kimberly Phillips and Corrynn Peters honored their personal experiences by requiring the award to go to a first-generation, female student passionate about pursuing a legal, criminal justice, or public service undergraduate degree. In partnership with the local nonprofit, Access College Foundation, the Phillips & Peters Young Women Leaders Access Scholarship was born.

Last year the inaugural award was earned by Jailyn Riddick. An impressive graduate of Western Branch High School with her sights set on a public service degree at George Mason University. Even through the difficulties of the COVID pandemic Jailyn was able to maintain an A average in her classes and stays connected with the firm.

This year we are proud to announce the Phillips & Peters Young Leaders Access Scholarship was earned by Chyna Carter. She is a graduate of Churchland high school in Portsmouth, Virginia. We first met Chyna in person at the Access Scholarship Award Celebration hosted at Norfolk State University on June 17th, 2021. The event was modeled after a graduation with the students walking across the stage to receive their certificates and medallion. This year more than $500,000 in scholarships were awarded to the Class of 2021 graduating seniors with the majority attending in-state schools. Ms. Carter will be attending Virginia Tech in the fall to pursue criminology.

From the inception of Phillips & Peters, our mission has been to “help you move forward.” Our team accomplishes this goal every day as we help our clients overcome the stresses of family law. We cannot wait to see all that Chyna accomplishes and how she in turn will help others move forward.
