Erin Nichols-Barnhill Takes Stress Away at Skin Theory

On the first Wednesday of every month, the family law office of Phillips & Peters celebrates Women Crush Wednesday! These are not sponsored or paid posts – just women business owners we love to support that are crushing it in Hampton Roads.

As Virginia plans to gradually reopen in the middle of May, patrons across the Commonwealth will be rushing to beauty salons for haircuts, nail appointments, and more. At Skin Theory By Erin, founder, and owner, Erin Nichols-Barnhill is ready to greet her clients with a warm smile and treat them to the relaxing experience she provides as a licensed Master Esthetician.

Erin’s career as an esthetician is a result of her lifelong fascination with skincare. As a little girl, she would apply her mother’s products to her own face and pretend she was explaining their importance to customers. She enjoyed hanging out in the local drug store just to familiarize herself with all the beauty products. In 2002 when she saw an ad for a new school seeking to train estheticians, she knew her path going forward.

Through the experience she gained working in a variety of spas, Erin found joy in connecting. “I feel as though I am able to connect the dots for clients. I love to explain why their skin is performing the way that it is and how products influence their skin.” Erin speaks to her guests about not only their skin but also their lifestyles, hormones & nutrition. After sixteen years working for others, Erin felt it was time to branch out on her own. She wanted to create a space where she could give back to her clients and continue to engage in the business of people.

In 2019 Skin Theory was born! “Skincare is so very important not only because the skin is our largest organ but when you think about it, our skin is a shield. It endures a lot. Our skin tells a story about what’s developing internally.”  Before the impact of COVID-19 Erin could treat clients to her relaxing and educational facials at her space in Virginia Beach. With the closing of nonessential businesses by Governor Northam Erin has been “enjoying every minute of being home and connecting with my two teenagers and husband.” In her downtime, she says, “I did not realize how much I was always on the move”. She’s also teaching aspiring esthetics students online.

For aspiring entrepreneurs, Erin recommends using this time to educate. “Speak to people who have what you desire. Read books. Go online and watch videos. There are so many resources to help guide you. Don’t forget to write everything down. You will be amazed all that you learn and can reflect on later.” Until Virginia enters Phase One of reopening Erin is offering virtual consultations for those in need. Along with facials, a client of Skin Theory can receive microdermabrasion, waxing, cleansing extractions, and power peels. Leave the stress of the coronavirus in the past when you step into Skin Theory. We know from our experiences that you’ll leave with glowing skin, an encouraged spirit, and a new friend.
