On the first Wednesday of every month, the family law office of Phillips & Peters celebrates Women Crush Wednesday! These are not sponsored or paid posts – just women business owners we think are crushing it in Hampton Roads that we love to support.

Spring Wiley is all about making her clients feel good by making them look good. She is the owner of Shear Dimensions, a hair salon in Chesapeake that almost lost its legacy in 2011. Though she never intended to be a business owner we love how Spring supports other business owners with her booth rental salon.

Spring started working at her current salon as a shampoo girl when she was in the 11th grade. At that time the location was “Hair to Spare” and it was one of the first booth rental salons in Chesapeake. Her co-workers quickly became friends and mentors so when Spring decided to pursue a career in hairstyling she already had a place to call home.

It wasn’t until Hair to Spare was about to close their doors that Spring stepped into the role of business owner. She’ll be the first to tell you she wasn’t someone that fantasized about having her own salon. With the encouragement of her husband and a desire to keep her work family together, she embraced the opportunity. Becoming a business owner meant more responsibility but also allowed more security and flexibility for the Wiley family.

“If you take care of your people then they will take care of it”.

Today Spring will attribute much of her success to the team around her. “We have an awesome group of women. There are no problems. There isn’t any drama. We’re a family”. She also sang the praise of her long-time mentor Paul Hughes. Paul is a second-generation barber. You’ll find him in Shear Dimensions working with his father’s original barber chair. His encouragement and support over the years have been a huge inspiration to Spring. You can feel the love of family when they talk about each other.

This familial love carries over to her clients as well, many of which have been with her for years. “The hairdresser/client relationship is different. It’s good. We share a lot of good times. We’ve shared some bad times. We’ve celebrated and cried together. It’s something different every day.” Spring does her best to make everyone feel important. Every client is her best client, including our own Corrynn Peters.

We’re thankful to know a business owner like Spring Wiley. She encourages us by giving her best to her clients and boosting up those around her. To anyone looking to start a business her advice was simple. “You can do it. Surround yourself with good people. Learn from failures and keep going. You can do it.”
