Tammi Redman

Tammi Redman

Administrative Assistant

Tammi is the first person on our team that will help you take a step forward. As the Receptionist and Administrative Assistant for the firm she is the first person you will encounter whether you are calling in or coming into the office. Born into a Coast Guard family, Tammi moved up and down the east coast until she found a home in Wakefield, VA. She lives there to this day with her husband, Brad and their four active children. Tammi stays busy outside of work as a member of the Colonial Coast Girl Scout community. She has been an outdoor facilitator to hundreds of girls in various activities such as canoeing, archery, rock wall climbing, backpacking, and high and low ropes courses. She particularly enjoys “caving” with her daughters and camping as often as possible with her family.

After working for 20+ years in the food industry, I was in desperate need of a change. I felt that my knowledge and experience were wasted in my position at the time. I worked long hours and never had opportunities to spend with my family. As the general manager of a fast-food restaurant, I was always on call, having to drop everything if my store “needed me.” I was burnt out. Through a mutual friend of the firm, I learned Phillips & Peters was looking to hire a new receptionist. I didn’t have specific experience in the position but I was hopeful that my many years of customer service would be an asset. I have always wanted to work in a career where I could be more helpful to people, and I found that at Phillips & Peters.

Together, my husband and I have 4 children, ranging from 10 yrs old to 17 yrs old. As a family, we love to spend time outdoors. We are very passionate about camping. We typically take multiple camping trips throughout the year, either as just a family or with our Girl Scout troop and friends. We have experienced and made many memories from camping, i.e. white water rafting, zip-lining, driving down the Dragons Backbone, and hiking the Triple Crown.

My customer service knowledge and experience serve me best in my current position. I am typically the first person that most people speak with at Phillips and Peters. When a client calls in upset, I do my best to try to calm them. Sometimes people just need someone to talk to them. I’ve learned to listen well and use my compassionate nature to serve them. Some situations are outside of our control but I can always listen and help point them in the better direction.

Liene Hawkins

Liene Hawkins

Paralegal

As a native to Virginia Beach, Liene Hawkins graduated from Tidewater Community College with an associate degree of Applied Science in Paralegal Studies in December 2006. She went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in Social Science from Ashford University while working in several areas of law. Her legal career thus far has included criminal, civil litigation, personal injury, and family law. In 2015, Liene joined the team of Phillips & Peters, where she began to focus on family law exclusively. She graciously wears the unofficial title of resident IT consultant and overall fixer.

Family law as a whole was surprising and new to me. I came from a 12-year career that consisted of just about every other kind of law, except family law. Although there are many similarities in the day-to-day procedure with family law and other types of law practiced in the General District Court, you have to have a certain temperament to assist with family law cases. People are in the throes of very emotional times in their lives when they engage one of our attorneys. They need a larger measure of empathy and time from you as the paralegal than you would need for civil litigation or even a criminal client. That was a big adjustment for me.

I wish I could say Johnny Cochran or a Supreme Court Case fueled my desire to be in the legal field but it was honestly my children. If not for them I’d probably be a backup dancer living like a hobo city to city. I needed a stable job to provide for them.

I try to develop a professional yet caring relationship with our clients. I want them to know that I care about their case and goals. Although there are times, we have to manage expectations and help our clients keep to deadlines; I hope that it comes across that I do care about each client and their case.

Ashley-Keil

Ashley Keil

Paralegal

A longtime resident of Hampton Roads, Ashley Keil decided to keep her talents close to home when she went to Old Dominion University to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. She graduated in May of 2006 and began her legal assistant career that same year. She has worked primarily in the family law field since 2008 and joined the Phillips & Peters family in 2017.

I love being a paralegal at Phillips & Peters because I really feel like I’m making a difference in people’s lives.  Having been through family law issues myself, I know it feels like a marathon and can be incredibly emotionally tough.  I like helping people in whatever way I can so they can get to the conclusion of their cases and move forward.

I enjoy spending time with my family and our dog, Enzo.  Our favorite family activity is to get up early, pack up and head to the Outer Banks to drive out on the beach and spend the day together.  We stay all day long and enjoy cookouts on the beach and head home late in the afternoon.  Another favorite day off would be traveling to one of the local recreation fields to watch one of our children play soccer or softball.

I think it’s important to remember that every custody battle is about the children.  Emotions run high especially when considering custody of your children, but the bottom line is you have to think of how this is affecting them and what is in their best interests.  Animosity with one another doesn’t help the children get through the stress they inevitably feel from parents going through litigation, so do whatever you can to just think of them first.

Kelsey-Walker

Kelsey Walker

Paralegal

Kelsey knew for a long time that she wanted to do something in the legal field but couldn’t pinpoint exactly what. Before her legal career began, she worked an assortment of jobs that included teaching dance, and nannying. When she joined Phillips & Peters in 2019, she was earning her bachelor’s degree in Paralegal Studies from Regent University. (A program that our founding partners helped develop!) She started as an administrative assistant and after 6 months was promoted to a full-time paralegal.

I wanted to be a professional dancer as a child. I don’t think a professional dancer has many similarities to this path but if I would have continued to teach dance then I do see a similarity there since both professions deal with families.

The biggest difference for me would be the fact that I grew up in a town that doesn’t even have a 4-way stop and then I moved to a fairly decent sized city with a large military population. I had to really learn how to live independently. I have no family nearby, and I had to learn to make new friends and sometimes be alone when my husband is away due to his military service with the US Navy. It has been a growing experience for me to leave my roots and learn how to make it without a whole lot of support. Work is a difference too because here I’ve met lots of different people. In Michigan, I grew up with everyone I worked with, or I went to school with their children. It’s a very different way of life than it is here in Virginia.

I think that the part of my job that makes me feel like I am helping clients move forward is working with the Legal Aid clients. It’s really rewarding to see and hear how excited they are when they receive the news that their final order of divorce has been entered. Especially since a lot of them have been waiting for this for a long time.
